Converting my PGCE

Postby Littleonion on Sun May 26, 2013 12:53 pm

Hello all,

I am currently half way through my PGCE in FE to teach 16+ students, however ideally I would like to move into working with 14+ students in a secure unit or PRU attached to a secondary school. Does anyone know or have any advice about converting my PGCE to be able to do this?

Thanks you

Hi,

I manage a website for people interested in working in the FE sector: http://www.talent.ac.uk

As of 1 April 2012, further education teachers who have been awarded QTLS by the Institute for Learning (IfL) and are members of the IfL are also recognised as qualified to teach in schools: http://www.ifl.ac.uk/newsandevents/pres ... in-schools, so rather than converting your PGCE you may just need to make employers aware of this.

Similarly, teachers can transfer to the FE sector from the schools sector. As of September 2007, an employer may ask someone with QTS to achieve Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills (QTLS) status within two years of taking up their new post. This can be achieved by completing a process called Professional Formation, which is a method of evidencing one's qualifications and experience. See: http://www.ifl.ac.uk/cpd/qtls-atls for more information.

If anyone would like further information about training to teach in the lifelong learning sector please contact FE advice at LSIS: fe.advice@lsis.org.uk or phone: 0300 303 1877 (lines are open Mon-Fri 10.00-13.00 and 14.00-16.30. Calls are charged at local rates)

Kind regards, Lucy
