Does anyone have any good ideas for activities in the afternoons?

At the minute I am teaching whole class maths and English in the mornings and that is absolutely fine. However in the afternoons I am doing group activities, one group with me and then 4 others doing independent activities. I try and base these other activities around things that are relevant, however am now worrying that I am not challenging them enough.

One table will be with me doing the topic work e.g. science, history etc.
I usually have one table doing puzzles- I'm not really sure what this is providing for their development?!
Another table practice their number or letter formation - they do it but I think its a bit boring.
Another table explore and draw pictures of old toys / dolls house as our topic is old and new toys.
Then I have a group on the carpet doing some building but again I don't really know what they're achieving from this.

Does anyone have any suggestions for good activities that they would recommend for children to do independently that actually have a purpose?

I feel stresssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssed
