Graduate Teacher Programme (GTP)

The GTP or Graduate Teacher Programme provides a 3 month - 1 year school based employment programme as a route into teaching. It is designed for graduate who want 'on the job' training leading to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).

This programme allows the training to be tailored to the individuals needs, and is a highly competitive route into teaching, as places are usually limited.

Applying for GTP

You can complete the GTP in any English or Welsh maintained school, as long as they are prepared to employ you as an unqualified teacher for the duration of the programme. Places can be found through school advertisements, or via a Designated Recommending Body (in England), usually your Local Education Authority. Find out when courses are open from and apply as early as possible due to high competition.

GTP Qualifications

You need qualifications at least equivalent to a UK bachelors degree and GCSE grade C or above in mathematics and English. If you intend to teach primary or key stage 2/3 (ages 7-14), you must also have achieved a standard equivalent to a grade C in a GCSE science subject.
Upon successful completion of the GTP you will achieve Qualified Teacher Status.
