It's not good enough as teachers to use the excuse 'I never have to use these skills so why should I learn them.' We do not accept it when students say this. Teaching is about leading by example. 17 million people in the UK have difficulty with numeracy; teachers should not be one of them. It does not matter if you do not use these maths skills in the classroom. They are vital skills for tracking progress of students and measuring/comparing results. Moreover, they are basic life skills. Whilst the tests are not easy, they are literally not rocket science. There is a funny irony about teachers having to go back to school to re-learn these skills; let's do as we encourage our students to and embrace the challenge head on!
